Introduction
Sunray Engineering, based in Ashford, Kent, needed to upgrade the floor in a 360 m² extension that had previously been used by another engineering business. The concrete surface was worn, heavily soiled and no longer suitable for a modern production environment. Having performed well for more than 15 years in Sunray’s existing facilities, Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura 750 solvent free Epoxy Floor Coating was chosen again. Elgood was appointed to prepare the slab and install a new high-build epoxy coating, delivering a durable, slip resistant industrial floor in a single four-day phase.
Background
Elgood Industrial Flooring had coated the floors in Sunray Engineering’s existing facilities over 15 years earlier. Those original Britdura 750 epoxy floors remained well bonded and continued to perform despite long-term use, giving Sunray confidence to repeat the specification for their extension.
The new area had been occupied by a different engineering company and showed the effects of years of industrial activity: ingrained contamination, general wear and an unattractive, uneven surface. Before the extension could be fully integrated into Sunray’s operation, the floor needed to be brought up to the same standard as the rest of the site, both in appearance and performance.
The Challenge
The project needed to address several clear requirements:

Resurface a worn and heavily soiled concrete floor in an engineering environment

Remove ingrained contamination and surface build-up left by the previous occupier

Provide a robust, solvent free epoxy coating that would match the long-term performance of the existing Elgood floors

Achieve a fine slip resistant finish suitable for day-to-day engineering operations and cleaning regimes

Complete the entire installation in a single phase over four days, minimising disruption and allowing the extension to be brought into use quickly
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring designed and installed a complete resurfacing system based on mechanical preparation and the proven Britdura 750 epoxy coating.
Key elements of the solution included:

Vacuum contained diamond grinding
The worn and contaminated concrete was prepared using vacuum contained diamond grinding machines. This process removed engineering build-up, laitance and surface contamination while smoothing and cleaning the slab, leaving a sound, profiled substrate ready to receive the new coating. -
Britdura 750 High-build Solvent Free Epoxy Coating
Elgood installed its Britdura 750 high-build scratch trowel applied solvent free Epoxy Coating in Dusty Grey RAL 7037. The resin was applied by trowel to ensure an even distribution of material across the entire 360 m² floor area. -
Consistent slip resistant finish
Once trowelled, the coating was finished by roller to achieve a uniform, fine slip resistant texture. This finish provides secure footing under typical engineering conditions while remaining straightforward to clean and maintain. -
Single-phase four-day installation
The full programme, from mechanical preparation through to final finishing, was completed in a single four-day phase by Elgood’s own in-house installation team, ensuring consistent workmanship and a single point of responsibility.

The refurbished industrial floor has transformed Sunray Engineering’s extension in Ashford, Kent:
