Introduction
Hyundai UK required a hard-wearing industrial floor coating for a new import workshop at Tilbury Docks, Essex. Having previously used Elgood Industrial Flooring and the Britdura range of solvent free epoxy floorings in 2006, Hyundai invited Elgood back to tender for the new facility. The project involved preparing 460 m² of lightly tamped, open-texture concrete with an existing layer of solvent based paint and installing a Britdura 750 / 1000 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating in Dusty Grey RAL 7037, creating a durable, easy-to-clean industrial floor completed in a single phase.
Background
Hyundai UK had already seen strong long-term performance from Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura systems in an earlier preparation workshop installation. That previous floor had continued to perform well for more than six years under constant traffic and had required no maintenance beyond routine cleaning.
For the new import workshop at Tilbury Docks, Hyundai wanted a similarly reliable industrial floor that would both improve presentation and match the appearance of Hyundai workshops elsewhere in the UK. The floor therefore needed to combine durability, ease of maintenance and a consistent corporate colour specification.
As British manufacturers and installers with over 125 years of industrial flooring experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring was able to manufacture, prepare and install the full coating system in-house, giving Hyundai a single point of responsibility throughout the project.
The Challenge
The project needed to meet several practical and visual requirements:
- Remove an existing layer of solvent based paint from 460 m² of lightly tamped, open-texture concrete
- Improve the floor profile where the concrete surface was at its roughest
- Provide a hard-wearing industrial floor coating for a busy import workshop
- Match the appearance of other Hyundai workshops around the UK using Dusty Grey RAL 7037
- Deliver a finish that would remain easy to clean and suitable for use with scrubber dryer machines
- Complete the installation in a fast single-phase programme
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete Britdura 750 / 1000 high-build solvent free epoxy flooring system tailored to Hyundai UK’s new import workshop.
Key elements of the solution included:
- Dust free shot-blasting
Dust free shot-blasting was used to remove the existing paint and clean the concrete, while also providing a strong physical key for the new epoxy coating. This preparation method helped create the correct surface profile for long-term adhesion. - Diamond grinding to improve profile
Diamond grinding was used to alleviate the worst of the concrete profile across the floor. This helped improve the substrate before the new coating system was applied and contributed to a more consistent finished surface. - Britdura 750 / 1000 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating
Hyundai selected Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura 750 / 1000 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating. The system is applied by scratch trowel and roller to a finished thickness of approximately 1 mm, creating a durable, high-build industrial floor finish suited to workshop use. - Dusty Grey RAL 7037 finish
To match Hyundai workshops around the UK, the coating was manufactured in Dusty Grey RAL 7037 specifically for this contract. This gave the new import workshop a clean, consistent and professional appearance. - Fine slip resistant texture
The finished floor included a built-in fine slip resistant finish, making it well suited to regular workshop use while remaining practical for routine cleaning with scrubber dryer machines.
The coating was manufactured, prepared and installed entirely by Elgood Industrial Flooring’s own in-house team, ensuring consistent workmanship and full control over the project from start to finish.

The completed industrial floor coating provided Hyundai UK with a durable and visually consistent workshop floor at Tilbury Docks, Essex:
- A 460 m² Britdura 750 / 1000 solvent free high-build epoxy industrial floor coating
- A hard-wearing workshop floor designed to perform under constant traffic
