Fidelity Studio Floor – TV Studio Floor Case Study, Cannon Street, London

Introduction

Fidelity required a high performance television studio floor for its broadcasting studio at offices in Cannon Street, London. The new facility needed a precision engineered surface that would support full multi-camera tracking and present well under studio lighting. Having been recommended to Fidelity, Elgood Industrial Flooring was employed by main contractor Mace to install a 100 m² Universal Television Studio Floor, converting a rough concrete slab into a super flat, dark grey operating surface tailored to broadcast use.

Background

As an investment house with a growing need for high quality video content, Fidelity chose to create a dedicated broadcasting studio within its London offices. The studio floor would be central to the space, influencing both camera performance and on-screen presentation.

Elgood Industrial Flooring has over 40 years of experience designing, manufacturing and installing specialist television studio floors. Our Universal Television Studio Floor System is manufactured in the UK and installed by our own in-house team, giving clients a complete, integrated solution with a proven track record across major broadcasters and corporate studios. For this project, Mace engaged Elgood to deliver a studio floor that met Fidelity’s technical and aesthetic requirements within the overall fit-out programme.

The Challenge

The Fidelity studio floor needed to meet several demanding requirements:

  • Convert a rough finished concrete slab into a super flat operating surface suitable for multi-camera tracking

  • Achieve flatness far beyond SR1 tolerances to allow camera pedestals to move smoothly anywhere on the floor

  • Integrate securely with Elgood’s studio floor fixings, providing a stable base for the Universal Television Studio Floor System

  • Provide a dark grey finish specified by the set designer, compatible with studio lighting and on-screen appearance

  • Work to the main contractor’s programme and meet Mace’s target date for completion of the studio floor

The finished floor had to perform technically for broadcast use while fitting seamlessly into the wider office and studio design.

The Solution

Elgood Industrial Flooring supplied and installed a Universal Television Studio Floor engineered specifically for Fidelity’s broadcasting studio.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • Mechanical preparation of the slab
The rough finished concrete was prepared using vacuum contained diamond grinding. This process removed surface irregularities and contamination while providing a clean, textured key for the studio floor system and minimising dust within the building.

  • Installation of Elgood floor fixings
Following preparation, Elgood floor fixings were installed to anchor the Universal Television Studio Floor System securely to the slab, ensuring stability and consistent performance across the 100 m² area.

  • Universal Television Studio Floor (average 35 mm thickness)
Elgood installed its Universal Television Studio Floor at an average thickness of 35 mm. The system was laid and levelled to deliver a super flat surface far exceeding SR1 tolerance, specifically designed for smooth multi-camera pedestal tracking and modern HD broadcast requirements.

  • Dark grey studio paint finish
To meet the set designer’s brief, the floor was finished with Mylands Semi Permanent Studio Floor Paint in Dark Grey. This provides a controlled sheen suitable for studio lighting, and the paint can be removed and refreshed as required, allowing the appearance to be maintained over time or changed for future productions.

Throughout the project, Elgood worked closely with Mace to coordinate activities and ensure the studio floor installation aligned with the main fit-out programme and key milestones.

Outcome

The completed Fidelity studio floor in Cannon Street, London, has delivered a broadcast-ready environment with a robust, long term operating surface:

  • A 100 m² Universal Television Studio Floor with super flat tolerances, enabling smooth, reliable multi-camera tracking

  • A dark grey semi-permanent painted finish specified by the set designer, providing a professional on-screen look that can be refreshed as needed

  • A tough, durable studio floor system designed and manufactured in the UK, installed by Elgood’s own in-house team

  • A floor that meets the technical demands of modern HD production while integrating with the wider office and studio design

  • A project delivered in line with Mace’s programme, giving Fidelity a dependable studio floor at the heart of its Cannon Street broadcasting facility

By transforming a rough concrete slab into a precision engineered Universal Television Studio Floor, Elgood Industrial Flooring has provided Fidelity with a high quality foundation for in-house broadcasting and media production.
