Introduction

Hames Chocolates required a hygienic and easy-to-clean industrial floor coating for a 1,300 m² extension at their Skegness facility. Having already used Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy coating in their existing factory in 2004, and seen it remain in good serviceable condition with no maintenance required, Hames invited Elgood back to tender for the new area. Elgood was appointed to prepare the concrete floor, remove the wax seal and install a Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy floor coating in Clipper Blue with a built-in fine slip resistant finish, completing the full project in just four days.

Background

Hames Chocolates needed an industrial floor that would support hygiene, cleanability and long-term performance in a food production environment. In this type of setting, the floor has to withstand daily use while also being straightforward to clean thoroughly at the end of each day.

The client had already experienced the benefits of Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura 750 system in their existing factory. That earlier installation, completed in 2004, had required no maintenance and remained in good serviceable condition, giving Hames confidence that the same system would be the right choice for the extension.

The Challenge

The project needed to meet several clear requirements:

• Install a hygienic industrial floor coating across 1,300 m² of extension space

• Provide a hard-wearing epoxy floor that would be easy to keep clean at the end of each day
• Deliver a fine slip resistant finish suitable for use with scrubber dryer machines

The Solution

Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy flooring system for Hames Chocolates in Skegness.

Key elements of the solution included:

• Vacuum contained shot-blasting and sanding
  The concrete floor was prepared using a combination of vacuum contained shot-blasting and sanding. This removed the wax seal and created the correct mechanical key for strong adhesion of the new epoxy coating system.
• Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy floor coating
  Hames selected Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy floor coating, a proven high-build system designed to provide a durable, hygienic and easy-to-maintain industrial floor.
• Clipper Blue finish
  The floor was finished in Clipper Blue, giving the extension a clean, bright and professional appearance suited to a food production environment.
• Fine slip resistant finish
  The completed floor included a built-in fine slip resistant finish, making it ideal for use with scrubber dryer machines and helping to balance day-to-day safety with ease of cleaning.
• Scratch trowel and roller application
  The coating was applied by scratch trowel and roller to a finished thickness of approximately 750 microns, helping to create an even and durable industrial floor finish across the full area.
