Introduction
A client in Derby was converting an existing industrial area to a new use and needed the floor refurbished before installing racking. Years of plant use had left the concrete damaged, soiled and coated with a failing finish. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to prepare and repair 1,200 m² of floor and to install a Britdura 750 Industrial Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating in Slate Grey with a Traffic Blue walkway and Walking Person signs. The refurbishment was completed in a five-day programme, from Wednesday to Sunday, leaving the floor ready for scissor lifts the following day.
Background
The industrial space had previously housed plant and equipment which had been stripped out as part of a wider change of use. Once cleared, the underlying condition of the concrete became clear: the surface was dirty, worn and locally damaged, with weak areas of previous coating still present.
Before new racking and an updated layout could be installed, the client needed a clean, robust and clearly organised industrial floor that would support safe storage, efficient material handling and straightforward cleaning. As a British manufacturer and installer with over 125 years of industrial flooring experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring was asked to deliver a complete, in-house solution using its own resin systems and installation team.
The Challenge
The project had several clear objectives:

Refurbish a damaged and soiled 1,200 m² industrial floor so it was suitable for its new use and the installation of racking

Carry out numerous localised repairs to restore the integrity and level of the slab using industrial strength resin repair materials

Provide a high build, solvent free epoxy floor coating with a fine slip resistant finish for everyday industrial traffic

Use colour and signage (Slate Grey with a Traffic Blue walkway and Walking Person symbols) to define safe pedestrian routes through the space

Complete the full refurbishment within a five-day programme, with the floor ready for access by scissor lifts immediately afterwards
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring designed and installed a complete refurbishment system centred on thorough mechanical preparation and a Britdura 750 Industrial Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating.
Key elements of the solution included:

Vacuum contained diamond grinding
The entire floor was prepared using vacuum contained diamond grinding to clean the surface, remove contamination and provide a uniform mechanical key. This dust-controlled method ensured a suitable substrate for the new coating while helping to maintain a cleaner working environment. -
Removal of weak coatings with PCD grinding
Weak and failing areas of the old coating were removed using diamond grinders fitted with PCD (polycrystalline diamond) segments. These tools strip compromised materials efficiently, exposing sound concrete where the new system can bond effectively. -
Industrial resin repairs
Numerous localised defects and damaged sections of the floor were excavated and rebuilt using Elgood’s industrial strength resin repair material. This created a level, stable base across the full 1,200 m² area, reducing the risk of future failures and ensuring a consistent finish. -
Britdura 750 Industrial Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating
The refurbished slab was coated with Britdura 750 Industrial Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating in Slate Grey, laid to the client’s layout. The coating was applied by trowel to ensure an even distribution of resin, then finished by roller to achieve a consistent fine slip resistant texture suitable for industrial use and regular cleaning. -
Traffic Blue walkway and Walking Person signs
A Traffic Blue walkway was incorporated into the layout, complete with Walking Person signs to clearly define pedestrian routes. This zoning helps separate people from equipment and racking, improving safety and visual organisation in the refurbished space.
All elements of the preparation, repair and coating were carried out by Elgood’s own small, full-time in-house installation team, providing the client with a single point of responsibility for materials, workmanship and programme delivery.
