Introduction
Westbury Controls required a cost-effective industrial floor coating for a 1,100 m² facility in Leicestershire ahead of a planned relocation. The existing concrete floor was old, worn, painted and uneven, with holes, machine footprints and trip hazards that needed attention before the building could be brought into use. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to prepare the floor, carry out remedial work and install a Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating in Slate Grey, completing the full project in a single four-day phase so the relocation could proceed on schedule.
Background
Westbury Controls needed an industrial floor that would improve the appearance of the building while also providing a hard-wearing and functional surface for day-to-day operations. Because the floor formed part of a relocation programme, time was critical and the installation had to be completed within a tight window.
The existing substrate was not in good condition. The concrete floor was worn, undulating and already painted, which meant the refurbishment needed to address both appearance and practicality. Elgood Industrial Flooring was selected to project manage the preparation and installation in full, helping Westbury meet their moving deadline with a durable, professional finish.
As British manufacturers and installers with more than 125 years of industrial flooring experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring was able to provide a complete in-house solution that balanced cost, performance and programme requirements.
The Challenge
The project needed to meet several clear requirements:
- Refurbish a 1,100 m² concrete floor that was old, worn, painted and undulating
- Repair holes, machine footprints, uneven patches and trip hazards before coating
- Provide a cost-effective industrial floor coating that improved appearance without the need for a thicker self-smoothing system
- Deliver a hard-wearing and functional finish suitable for ongoing industrial use
- Complete the full installation in a single four-day phase so Westbury could relocate on time
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy flooring system tailored to Westbury Controls’ relocation programme and budget.
Key elements of the solution included:
- Vacuum contained shot-blasting and diamond grinding
The concrete floor was prepared using vacuum contained shot-blasting and diamond grinding. This removed weak surface material, cleaned the painted concrete and created the correct mechanical key for strong adhesion of the new epoxy floor coating. - Remedial work to defects and uneven areas
Between coats, Elgood carried out remedial work including filling holes, smoothing machine footprints, improving uneven patches and dealing with trip hazards. This helped create a more practical and reliable base for the final finish. - Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating
Westbury selected Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura 750 solvent free high-build epoxy floor coating. Applied by scratch trowel, the system provides a measured quantity and thickness across the floor and offers a cost-effective alternative to a 1.5 mm to 2 mm self-smoothing floor. - Approximate 1 mm floor thickness
The coating system was installed to an overall thickness of approximately 1 mm, giving the floor a durable high-build finish suited to industrial use while remaining cost-effective. - Slate Grey finish with built-in fine slip resistance
The completed floor was finished in Slate Grey with a built-in fine slip resistant finish, combining a professional appearance with everyday safety and practicality.
All preparation and installation works were project managed entirely by Elgood Industrial Flooring, ensuring the programme stayed on track and Westbury could complete the move as planned.
Outcome
The completed industrial floor coating provided Westbury Controls with a durable and more presentable floor in Leicestershire:
- A 1,100 m² Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy industrial floor coating
- A refurbished floor where holes, uneven patches, machine footprints and trip hazards were addressed before finishing
- A cost-effective coating solution that improved appearance and function without the need for a thicker self-smoothing system
- A Slate Grey finish with built-in fine slip resistance for safer, more practical everyday use
- A project completed in a single four-day phase, ready in time for Westbury to complete their relocation
By combining vacuum contained preparation, targeted remedial work and a proven Britdura 750 epoxy flooring system, Elgood Industrial Flooring delivered a hard-wearing, practical and cost-effective industrial floor that supported Westbury Controls’ relocation and long-term operational needs in Leicestershire.
