Introduction
Severn Engineering required a high-performance industrial floor coating for a new 1,000 m² unit in Worcestershire as part of its move from two smaller premises into one larger facility. The business wanted a floor that would help create the right image for its refurbished laser cutting machine operation while also standing up to manufacturing use and fork lift traffic. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to prepare the new power floated concrete slab and install a Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating in Slate Grey and French Blue, complete with yellow gangway markings and a fine slip resistant finish, all completed to schedule in just four days.
Background
Severn Engineering was consolidating from two smaller units into one larger new facility in Worcestershire. As part of that move, the floor was seen as an important part of both the operational set-up and the presentation of the new unit.
The company refurbishes laser cutting machines, so the industrial floor needed to project a clean, professional image while also being robust enough to cope with everyday manufacturing activity and regular fork lift traffic. The substrate was a newly laid power floated concrete slab that had been in place for only 28 days, meaning the correct preparation and primer system were critical to long-term performance.
As British manufacturers and installers with over 125 years of industrial flooring experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring was able to provide a complete in-house solution tailored to the needs of the project.
The Challenge
The project needed to meet several clear requirements:
- Install a durable industrial floor coating over a new power floated concrete slab laid only 28 days earlier
- Provide a hard wearing finish suitable for manufacturing operations and regular fork lift traffic
- Create a more professional and visually organised environment in the new facility
- Introduce colour zoning and gangway markings to improve layout clarity and safe movement
- Complete the preparation and installation quickly so the new unit could be brought into use on schedule
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy flooring system for Severn Engineering’s new Worcestershire facility.
Key elements of the solution included:
- Shot-blasting and edge preparation
The new power floated concrete slab was prepared using shot-blasting to provide a light physical key. Edges along walls and other detailed areas were prepared using diamond grinding to ensure a consistent standard of preparation across the floor. - Low viscosity solvent free epoxy primer
The first coat in the system was a low viscosity solvent free epoxy primer. This primer is particularly well suited to new concrete because of its moisture resistant properties, helping to create a reliable base for the high-build coating. It is also effective on older worn concrete, making it a flexible and proven part of the system. - Britdura 750 high-build epoxy floor coating
The floor was finished with two coloured coats of Britdura solvent free epoxy floor coating as part of the Britdura 750 high-build system. All three coats, including the primer, were applied by trowel to ensure even coverage and a consistent build of approximately 750 microns to 1 mm. - Slate Grey and French Blue colour scheme
The completed industrial floor was laid in Slate Grey and French Blue, helping to create a cleaner, more organised and more professional appearance throughout the new facility. - Yellow gangway markings and fine slip resistance
Yellow lines were installed to highlight the gangway, improving route definition and safety. The floor was also given a fine slip resistant finish to support day-to-day use while remaining easy to clean and maintain.
All works were completed by Elgood Industrial Flooring’s own in-house installation team, ensuring consistent workmanship and a single point of responsibility from preparation through to final finishing.
Outcome
The completed industrial floor coating has provided Severn Engineering with a durable and visually improved manufacturing floor in Worcestershire:
- A 1,000 m² Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating installed over new power floated concrete
- A hard wearing surface capable of withstanding manufacturing use and regular fork lift traffic
- A professional-looking industrial floor in Slate Grey and French Blue that supports the image of the new facility
- Yellow gangway markings that improve layout clarity and help define safe movement routes
- A fine slip resistant finish that balances day-to-day safety with ease of cleaning
- A project completed to schedule in just four days by Elgood’s own in-house team
By combining correct preparation, moisture resistant priming and a proven Britdura 750 high-build epoxy system, Elgood Industrial Flooring delivered a reliable, attractive and practical industrial floor that supports both the operational demands and presentation goals of Severn Engineering’s new Worcestershire facility.
