Industrial Floor Renovation for Tarkett in Maidstone, Kent

Introduction

Tarkett required a strong and hard-wearing industrial floor for its facility in Maidstone, Kent. The existing 1,300 m² floor was heavily contaminated, undulating and pitted, with numerous repairs and a smoothing compound running the length of the building, so it needed substantial preparation before a new industrial flooring system could be installed.

Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to project manage the complete removal, preparation and installation process. The works included milling and planing to remove and reduce the floor, breakers to attend to edges, vacuum contained shotblasting, diamond grinding, installation of Ardex K80 High Strength Industrial Smoothing Screed and finishing with Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating in Light Grey and Slate Grey.

The full industrial floor renovation was completed in a single fourteen-day phase during the summer shutdown.

Background

Tarkett needed an industrial floor that would be strong enough to withstand day-to-day use while also being easy to clean routinely to enhance housekeeping. The condition of the existing floor meant that a simple coating would not have been sufficient. The substrate required extensive preparation and resurfacing to create a suitable base for long-term industrial floor performance.

To help Tarkett assess the suitability of the proposed flooring system, Elgood Industrial Flooring installed trial patches free of charge one year before the refurbishment began. This gave the client confidence in the performance of the selected industrial floor system before committing to the full project.

As British manufacturers and installers with more than 125 years of experience in industrial flooring, Elgood Industrial Flooring was able to provide a complete in-house solution. The removal, preparation and installation were project managed entirely by Elgood, giving Tarkett a single point of responsibility throughout the works.

The Challenge

The project needed to address several clear requirements:

Prepare and refurbish a 1,300 m² heavily contaminated industrial floor

Remove and reduce undulating and pitted areas of the existing surface

Remove numerous repairs and a smoothing compound running the length of the building

Provide a floor strong enough to withstand Tarkett’s day-to-day use

Install a surface that could be cleaned routinely to enhance housekeeping

Create a clearly defined floor plan with lines, crossings and fire extinguisher points

Deliver the full industrial floor renovation in one fourteen-day phase during the summer shutdown

The Solution

Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete industrial floor renovation system for Tarkett in Maidstone, Kent.

Key elements of the solution included:

Trial patches

Elgood installed trial patches free of charge one year before the refurbishment. This allowed Tarkett to assess the performance and suitability of the proposed industrial floor system before the main works were carried out.

Milling and planing

Milling and planing were used to remove and reduce areas of the existing floor. This was required because the floor was heavily contaminated, undulating and pitted, with old repairs and smoothing compound that needed to be removed before resurfacing.

Breakers to floor edges

Breakers were used to attend to the floor edges. This helped ensure that perimeter areas and more difficult sections of the floor were properly prepared as part of the wider renovation process.

Vacuum contained shotblasting and diamond grinding

Vacuum contained shotblasting and diamond grinding were used to prepare the concrete. These methods cleaned and profiled the substrate, creating a suitable base for the smoothing screed and final epoxy floor coating.

Ardex K80 High Strength Industrial Smoothing Screed

Elgood installed Ardex K80 High Strength Industrial Smoothing Screed to an average thickness of approximately 10 mm. This resurfaced the floor and helped create a stronger, more even base for the final industrial floor finish.

The completed industrial floor build-up achieved a total thickness of approximately 11 mm.

Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating

The smoothing screed was finished with Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating in Light Grey and Slate Grey. This created a durable, sealed and practical industrial floor finish suitable for routine use.

The Britdura 750 system provided the hard-wearing surface required by Tarkett while improving the appearance and cleanability of the facility.

Floor plan markings

The industrial floor was laid to Tarkett’s floor plan, with yellow lines, crossings and boxes. Red boxes were also installed to highlight fire extinguisher points, supporting clearer organisation and improved visibility across the site.

Very fine slip resistant finish

The finished floor included a built-in very fine slip resistant texture. This provided practical grip underfoot while remaining ideal for cleaning with scrubber dryer machines.

Outcome

The completed industrial floor renovation provided Tarkett with a stronger, cleaner and more practical floor for its Maidstone facility:

A 1,300 m² industrial floor renovation completed during the summer shutdown

A single fourteen-day installation phase

Milling and planing to remove and reduce the existing floor

Breakers used to attend to floor edges

Vacuum contained shotblasting and diamond grinding to prepare the concrete

Ardex K80 High Strength Industrial Smoothing Screed installed to an average thickness of approximately 10 mm

Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating in Light Grey and Slate Grey

A total floor thickness of approximately 11 mm

Yellow lines, crossings and boxes laid to Tarkett’s floor plan

Red boxes to highlight fire extinguisher points

A built-in very fine slip resistant finish suitable for scrubber dryer cleaning

By combining trial patches, mechanical removal, concrete preparation, high strength smoothing screed and Britdura 750 epoxy floor coating, Elgood Industrial Flooring delivered a robust industrial floor renovation for Tarkett in Maidstone, Kent. The finished floor provided the strength, cleanability and visual organisation needed to support day-to-day industrial use.
