Introduction
Diperk needed a hard-wearing industrial floor coating for its Peterborough facility, where Perkins diesel engines are refurbished and serviced. The existing concrete floor had been heavily shot-blasted in the past and carried a roller-applied epoxy coating that varied in thickness, leaving the surface uneven and less suitable for a smart, efficient servicing environment. Following a successful trial installation, Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to prepare the floor and install a Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating in Slate Grey and French Blue, complete with yellow bay markings and a fine slip resistant finish, all delivered within a seven day programme.
Background
Diperk required an industrial floor that could cope with the demands of diesel engine refurbishment and servicing while also improving the overall presentation of the facility. The floor needed to be robust enough for heavy engineering use, but it also had to support a more organised, professional-looking workshop layout.
The existing substrate presented clear challenges. The concrete had already been shot-blasted heavily on a previous occasion and had later received a roller-applied epoxy floor coating that varied in thickness. This meant the floor needed careful preparation before a new industrial flooring system could be installed successfully.
As British manufacturers and installers with more than 125 years of industrial flooring experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring was able to demonstrate the proposed preparation method and coating system through a trial area before proceeding with the full installation.
The Challenge
The project needed to achieve several important objectives:
- Refurbish a concrete floor that had previously been heavily shot-blasted and coated unevenly with epoxy
- Remove the existing coating and manage the rough surface profile left by earlier preparation work
- Provide a hard-wearing industrial floor suitable for refurbishing and servicing Perkins diesel engines
- Deliver a cost-effective system that also improved the presentation of the workshop
- Introduce a detailed floor layout with contrasting colours and line markings to create a grid of servicing bays
- Ensure the finished floor was easy to clean, maintain and safe underfoot
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy flooring system for the Diperk facility in Peterborough.
Key elements of the solution included:
- Trial installation
Before the main works began, Elgood installed a trial area to demonstrate the proposed preparation method and floor system. This gave Diperk confidence in both the finish and the approach before committing to the full project. - Shot-blasting and diamond grinding
Shot-blasting was used to remove the existing epoxy coating. Because the floor had already been heavily shot-blasted in the past, diamond grinding was then used to alleviate the surface profile and create a more suitable base for the new coating system. - Industrial vacuum cleaning
Once preparation was complete, the floor was thoroughly cleaned using an industrial vacuum to remove dust and debris and ensure a sound surface for the new epoxy system. - Britdura 750 high-build epoxy floor coating
Diperk selected the Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating. This system consists of a low viscosity solvent free epoxy primer and two coloured coats of Britdura solvent free epoxy floor coating. All three coats were applied by trowel to achieve even coverage and a consistent build of approximately 750 microns to 1 mm. - Slate Grey and French Blue floor layout
The finished floor was laid in Slate Grey and French Blue to create a more organised and professional environment. Yellow lines were added to form a grid of servicing bays, while hazard hatching was installed at the entrances to the stock and servicing areas. - Fine slip resistant finish
The floor was given a fine slip resistant finish to improve safety while remaining practical for cleaning and routine workshop maintenance.
All works were completed by Elgood Industrial Flooring’s own in-house installation team, ensuring consistent workmanship and a single point of responsibility from preparation through to final finishing.
Outcome
The completed industrial floor coating has provided Diperk with a durable and clearly organised engineering floor in Peterborough:
- A Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating designed for heavy-duty engine refurbishment and servicing work
- A refurbished concrete floor where uneven existing coatings and excessive surface profile have been professionally managed
- A detailed floor layout in Slate Grey and French Blue with yellow servicing bay markings and hazard hatching
- A fine slip resistant finish that supports everyday safety while remaining easy to clean and maintain
- A cost-effective industrial flooring solution delivered to schedule in seven days
By combining careful preparation, a proven Britdura 750 epoxy system and a practical bay-marked layout, Elgood Industrial Flooring delivered a hard-wearing, professional-quality industrial floor that supports both the operational and presentation needs of Diperk’s Peterborough facility.
