Industrial Floor Coating for Arnold Wragg – Epoxy Flooring Case Study, Sheffield

Introduction

Arnold Wragg required a high-performance industrial floor coating for a new 1,300 m² power floated concrete floor at their Sheffield facility. The business needed a hard wearing surface capable of coping with manufacturing use and regular fork lift traffic, while also delivering a good standard of appearance and a sealed finish that would be easy to clean and maintain. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to prepare the new slab, smooth the joints and install a Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating in Light Grey with a fine slip resistant finish, completing the project to schedule in just four days.

Background

Arnold Wragg needed confidence that the chosen industrial floor coating would meet both performance expectations and budget requirements. The floor would be used in a manufacturing environment, so durability under fork lift traffic was a key consideration, along with long-term appearance and straightforward maintenance.

The substrate was a new power floated concrete slab, which required the right preparation and primer system to ensure strong adhesion and lasting performance. As British manufacturers and installers with more than 125 years of industrial flooring experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring was able to supply a complete in-house solution, from specification and colour samples through to final installation.

The Challenge

The project needed to meet several clear requirements:

  • Install a durable industrial floor coating over a new power floated concrete slab
  • Provide a hard wearing finish suitable for manufacturing use and frequent fork lift traffic
  • Deliver a sealed, attractive and easy-to-clean surface within the client’s budget
  • Smooth over joints between slabs to avoid lips that could become exposed under regular fork lift movement
  • Complete the full preparation and installation quickly so the floor was ready within the required programme

The Solution

Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy flooring system tailored to the needs of Arnold Wragg’s Sheffield facility.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • Shot-blasting and edge preparation
The new power floated concrete floor was prepared using shot-blasting to provide a light physical key. Edges along walls and other detailed areas were prepared using diamond grinding to ensure a consistent standard of preparation across the full floor area.
  • Epoxy mortar joint smoothing
Arnold Wragg were particularly concerned about slab joints becoming exposed and creating lips under frequent fork lift traffic. These joints were smoothed using Elgood’s epoxy mortar, helping to create a more even and reliable working surface.
  • Low viscosity solvent free epoxy primer
A low viscosity solvent free epoxy primer was used as the first coat. This primer is particularly well suited to new concrete because of its moisture resistant properties, helping to create a sound base for the high-build coating system.
  • Britdura 750 high-build epoxy floor coating
The floor was finished with two coloured coats of Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating. All three coats in the system, including the primer, were applied by trowel to ensure even coverage and consistent build.
  • Light Grey fine slip resistant finish
The completed floor was laid in Light Grey with a fine slip resistant finish, providing a clean, professional appearance while supporting day-to-day safety and ease of cleaning.

Elgood Industrial Flooring moved quickly from initial contact to completed installation, with the floor visited, the price confirmed and the work carried out within three weeks, ready for Arnold Wragg’s programme.

Outcome

The completed industrial floor coating has provided Arnold Wragg with a durable and practical manufacturing floor in Sheffield:

  • A 1,300 m² Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating installed over new power floated concrete
  • A hard wearing finish capable of withstanding manufacturing use and regular fork lift traffic
  • Smoothed slab joints that reduce the risk of exposed lips developing under repeated traffic
  • A sealed, easy-to-clean surface in Light Grey with a fine slip resistant finish
  • A project completed to schedule in just four days by Elgood’s own in-house installation team

By combining correct preparation, moisture resistant priming, epoxy mortar joint treatment and a proven Britdura 750 system, Elgood Industrial Flooring delivered a reliable, good-looking industrial floor that met Arnold Wragg’s operational and budget requirements from day one.
