Introduction
Riverside Studios has created new facilities at its historic television and theatrical base in Hammersmith, West London. As part of this development, Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed by Riverside TV to supply and install a new Universal Television Studio Floor in Studio 2. The 471 m² studio required a smooth, durable and visually consistent surface suitable for both theatre and multi camera television production. Elgood delivered a semi-gloss Dusty Grey RAL 7037 studio floor with an average build of 35 mm, installed safely and on time during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Background
Riverside Studios is a well-known venue with a long history in both theatre and television. The redevelopment of the site included multiple new studio spaces, each requiring a high quality, purpose designed floor that could cope with demanding production schedules.
Studio 2 is the third Riverside studio to receive the Elgood Universal Studio Floor. Having already proved successful in other studios on the site, the Universal system was again chosen to provide a consistent, studio grade operating surface that would support both theatrical performances and television work within the same space.
The Challenge
The project for Studio 2 had several specific requirements:
-
Provide a precision laid studio floor across 471 m², suitable for both theatre and multi camera television production
-
Prepare the concrete slab correctly so the new floor would bond well and perform over the long term
-
Deliver a semi-gloss finish in Dusty Grey RAL 7037 that would work under different lighting conditions and match other Riverside studios
-
Achieve an average floor build of around 35 mm to create a smooth, level operating surface across the entire studio
-
Complete the project while working in a Covid-secure way, using only in-house staff and following government guidance
In addition, Elgood was employed directly by Riverside TV after the main contractor had left site, which is Elgood’s preferred stage for installing studio floors.
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring installed its in-house manufactured Universal Television Studio Floor system in Studio 2, following a structured process from preparation through to final finishing.
Key elements of the solution included:
-
Vacuum contained shot-blasting
The concrete floor was prepared using vacuum contained shot-blasting. This removed surface contamination and laitance, cleaned the slab and provided a consistent mechanical key for the Universal Studio Floor build-up, while keeping dust under control within the building. -
Universal Television Studio Floor, average 35 mm thickness
The Universal Television Studio Floor was installed across the 471 m² studio at an average thickness of 35 mm. This build allowed the floor to be levelled and smoothed, creating a studio-ready operating surface suitable for theatre staging and television cameras. -
Semi-gloss Dusty Grey RAL 7037 finish
The floor was finished in a semi-gloss Dusty Grey RAL 7037, a colour and sheen level that works well under studio and house lighting. This shade has also been used successfully on other major studio projects, providing a neutral, professional background for sets and performances. -
Covid-secure working practices
Elgood project managed and installed the floor using only its own Covid risk assessed full time employees. Measures included avoiding public transport in London, maintaining high standards of hygiene, wearing appropriate PPE and remaining alert to the risks associated with Covid-19 throughout the programme.
Outcome
The completed studio floor in Riverside Television Studio 2 has provided Riverside TV with a robust, flexible space that supports both theatre and television:
-
A 471 m² Universal Television Studio Floor with an average 35 mm build, delivering a smooth, studio grade operating surface
-
A durable semi-gloss Dusty Grey RAL 7037 finish that performs well under different lighting conditions and matches other studios on site
-
A dual purpose floor that can accommodate both theatre productions and multi camera television work in the same space
-
A substrate properly prepared by vacuum contained shot-blasting, supporting long term adhesion and performance
-
An installation completed safely under Covid-secure procedures by a British manufacturer installer using only its own full time team
By converting the concrete slab into a precision laid Universal Television Studio Floor, Elgood Industrial Flooring has helped Riverside Studios extend the capability of its Hammersmith complex, giving producers and performers a reliable, high quality Studio 2 floor for years of use.
