Introduction
When BBC Studioworks returned to the historic Television Centre in London, the studio floors in three key spaces were more than 20 years old and in need of refurbishment. Studio TC1, the largest television studio at Television Centre with a 900 m² floor, had been used for storing construction equipment and materials during redevelopment and required a full upgrade before it could host new productions. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed directly by the BBC to overlay the existing sound floor with a 4 mm Universal Television Studio Floor operating surface, restoring TC1 to a super flat, broadcast-ready studio complete with fire lanes and numeric grid markings.
Background
BBC Studioworks’ move back to Television Centre brought one of the UK’s most recognisable broadcast locations back into regular use. However, years of intensive production followed by a period of construction and storage had left the original studio floors tired and marked.
In TC1, the underlying floor was still fundamentally sound, but the surface required refurbishment to meet the expectations of modern multi camera production. BBC Studioworks wanted a studio floor that would:
-
Deliver a smooth, reliable operating surface across the full 900 m² studio
-
Support camera pedestals, heavy scenery and technical equipment without flatness issues
-
Provide clear fire lanes and grid markings to support efficient set construction and layout planning
Elgood Industrial Flooring has had an association with Television Centre for over 50 years and was selected to continue that relationship by refurbishing the TC1 studio floor with its British-manufactured Universal Television Studio Floor system.
The Challenge
The TC1 refurbishment had several specific requirements:
-
Refurbish a 900 m² studio floor that had been used for storage during construction, without removing the sound existing slab
-
Provide a new operating surface that would meet the flatness and durability needs of modern multi camera productions
-
Use preparation methods that would clean and key the existing floor without damaging it
-
Incorporate fire lanes and a numeric grid into the finished floor to make set construction and positioning quicker and more accurate
-
Deliver the project ahead of programme using Elgood’s own full-time, in-house team
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring designed a refurbishment solution based on overlaying the existing studio floor with a new Universal Television Studio Floor operating surface.
Key elements of the solution included:
-
Assessment of existing floor
The TC1 studio floor was assessed and confirmed as sound and suitable for overlay. This avoided the disruption and cost of removing the existing build up and made best use of the studio’s original construction. -
Vacuum contained diamond grinding
The existing surface was prepared using vacuum contained diamond grinding to clean and etch the floor. This process removed contamination, provided a strong mechanical key for the new operating surface and controlled dust within the studio environment. -
4 mm Universal Television Studio Floor operating surface
Elgood installed a 4 mm Universal Television Studio Floor operating surface across the full 900 m² of TC1. Designed, manufactured and installed in-house, the Elgood Universal system provides:-
A super flat operating surface suitable for multi camera pedestal operation
-
A tough, long lasting finish capable of withstanding repeated set builds, equipment moves and audience-based productions
-
An anti static performance as standard to help protect sensitive broadcast electronics
-
-
Fire lanes and numeric grid
As part of the installation, Elgood incorporated fire lanes and a grid with numeric references into the studio floor. These markings simplify set construction, make positioning more repeatable and help maintain clear access routes around the studio.
All works were completed by Elgood’s small team of full-time employees, ensuring consistent workmanship and a single point of responsibility for both materials and installation. The project was delivered ahead of schedule.
Outcome
The refurbished Universal Television Studio Floor in BBC Studioworks’ Television Centre TC1 has delivered:
-
A 900 m² super flat operating surface suitable for high-end multi camera productions
-
A robust 4 mm studio floor overlay installed on a sound existing slab, maximising value and minimising disruption
-
Integrated fire lanes and a numeric grid to support efficient set construction, layout planning and safe circulation
-
A studio floor installed ahead of schedule by a British manufacturer-installer with over 50 years of association with Television Centre
By overlaying the original floor with a new Universal Television Studio Floor operating surface, Elgood Industrial Flooring has helped return TC1 to its former glory as a flagship studio space at the heart of BBC Studioworks’ Television Centre operation in London.
