2 mm Industrial Floor at Mecmesin – Epoxy Flooring Case Study, Slinfold, Sussex

Introduction

Mecmesin, a specialist manufacturer based in Slinfold, Sussex, required a robust industrial floor to support forklift and pallet truck movements in a key operational area. The existing surface comprised carpet and older finishes that were not suitable for modern materials handling. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to remove the existing coverings, prepare the concrete and install a 2 mm Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy industrial floor in Pebble Grey RAL 7032, all completed over an extended weekend programme to minimise disruption.

Background

The floor area at Mecmesin covered approximately 80 m² and formed part of a busy circulation and storage zone. Over time, the surface had evolved with carpet and previous floor treatments, leaving a finish that was difficult to clean, prone to wear and not ideally suited to forklift and pallet truck traffic.

Mecmesin needed a hard wearing, easy-to-clean industrial floor that would:

  • Support regular forklift and pallet truck movements

  • Provide fine slip resistance without trapping dirt

  • Integrate neatly with adjacent carpeted areas in the wider facility

  • Be installed quickly, with minimal interruption to day-to-day operations

Having chosen Elgood Industrial Flooring, Mecmesin asked for the refurbishment to be carried out over an extended Friday–Sunday weekend, with the work phased to maintain access where possible.

The Challenge

The project brief presented several practical and technical challenges:

  • Removing carpet, adhesive and latex residues to expose sound concrete ready for a resin system

  • Preparing the slab mechanically while controlling dust within an operational environment

  • Carrying out localised concrete repairs to deal with any defects uncovered after stripping

  • Installing a solvent free epoxy floor with a fine slip resistant texture that would still allow straightforward sweeping and housekeeping

  • Creating clean transitions between the new industrial floor and retained carpet using a suitable threshold detail

  • Completing the refurbishment in four tightly planned phases over an extended weekend to minimise disruption

The Solution

Elgood Industrial Flooring designed a complete refurbishment solution built around its Britdura 750 High-build solvent free Epoxy Floor Coating.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • Carpet removal and concrete exposure
The existing carpet was stripped using a floor-stripping machine. Adhesive and latex residues were then removed by diamond grinding, cleaning the slab and exposing sound concrete ready to accept the new industrial floor.

  • Vacuum contained diamond grinding
The concrete was prepared using vacuum contained diamond grinding. This method removed remaining contamination, provided a consistent mechanical key for the epoxy coating and controlled dust, helping to keep the surrounding environment clean during the works.

  • Resin mortar repairs
Localised defects in the slab were rebuilt using Elgood’s solvent free epoxy resin mortar. These repairs reinstated strength and level, ensuring that the finished industrial floor would be both durable and visually consistent.

  • Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy floor coating (approx. 2 mm)
Elgood installed its Britdura 750 High-build solvent free Epoxy Floor Coating at around 2 mm thickness. The system was laid to provide a dense, hard wearing industrial surface suitable for forklift and pallet truck traffic. A built-in fine slip resistant texture was incorporated as part of the system, rather than being sprinkled by hand, so it does not inhibit sweeping or routine housekeeping.

  • Colour and layout
The floor was finished in Pebble Grey RAL 7032, providing a clean, neutral appearance that brightens the area and makes it easier to see dirt and debris. Pallet bays were highlighted with lines and numerals, and areas of specific use were picked out in contrasting colours to support safe and efficient storage.

  • Threshold detailing
At the interface between the new resin floor and the retained carpet, the carpet was cut to a straight line and a black Gradus T450 reducing strip was installed. This created a neat, durable transition detail and reduced the risk of trip hazards.

The entire refurbishment was completed in four phases over an extended Friday–Sunday weekend by Elgood’s own small, full-time in-house installation team.

Outcome

The new industrial floor at Mecmesin’s Slinfold facility has delivered a practical, long term improvement to the working environment:

  • A robust 2 mm Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy industrial floor designed to carry forklift and pallet truck traffic

  • A Pebble Grey RAL 7032 finish with a built-in fine slip resistant texture that supports safety without compromising cleaning

  • Clearly marked pallet bays and contrasting colour zones that improve layout clarity and stock management

  • A clean, professional transition between carpeted offices and the resin-coated industrial floor using a Gradus reducing strip

  • A fast, extended-weekend refurbishment completed in four phases, minimising disruption to Mecmesin’s operations

By combining careful mechanical preparation, targeted repairs and a high performance epoxy floor coating, Elgood Industrial Flooring has provided Mecmesin with a durable, easy-to-maintain industrial floor that supports both day-to-day handling and long term operational performance.
