Refreshing Industrial Floor Coating for Leonhard Kurz – Epoxy Flooring Case Study, Watford

Introduction

Leonhard Kurz UK Ltd, a specialist in decorative and functional coatings, needed to refresh the main production floor at their Watford facility. The concrete slab had been coated by Elgood Industrial Flooring nearly 20 years earlier and, although the original system remained well adhered, the surface showed understandable signs of wear and tear. Elgood was invited back to refurbish 1,400 m² of floor, using vacuum contained diamond grinding to etch the existing coating and installing a Britdura 500 high-build solvent free epoxy floor in Light Grey and French Blue with yellow epoxy line markings, completed over two extended weekend phases.

Background

The existing floor at Leonhard Kurz had been a long term success story. Installed almost two decades earlier, the original industrial floor coating supplied by Elgood was still firmly bonded to the concrete and performing structurally. However, years of production use had left the surface worn and in need of a visual and functional refresh.

Rather than stripping everything back to bare concrete, the client wanted to build on the performance of the existing system, leveraging its excellent adhesion and inter-coat compatibility. As British manufacturers and installers with 125 years of industrial flooring experience, Elgood were ideally placed to assess the condition of the floor and propose a cost effective refurbishment strategy using their own Britdura high-build epoxy technology.

The Challenge

The refurbishment brief for Leonhard Kurz UK Ltd included several key requirements:

  • Refurbish a 1,400 m² industrial floor that had been coated nearly 20 years earlier without unnecessary removal of a well adhered system

  • Use preparation methods that would thoroughly clean and etch the existing surface to provide a strong inter-coat bond

  • Specify a high-build, solvent free epoxy coating capable of delivering long term performance in a busy engineering and production environment

  • Introduce clear, durable line markings and colour demarcation to improve layout definition, safety and workflow

  • Complete the works in two phases over extended weekends to minimise disruption to day to day operations

The Solution

Elgood Industrial Flooring designed a refurbishment solution that took full advantage of the excellent adhesion and inter-coat performance of the existing floor system.

Mechanical preparation

  • Vacuum contained diamond grinding was used to etch and clean the existing coating across the full 1,400 m² area.

  • This preparation removed surface contamination, keys the coating mechanically and creates the ideal profile for the new high-build epoxy system, all while controlling dust within the live industrial environment.

Industrial flooring system – Britdura 500

  • Elgood specified their Britdura 500 High-build Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating for the refurbishment.

  • The system provides a tough, chemically resistant, high-build industrial floor ideal for engineering and manufacturing settings where long term value is critical.

  • The new coating was applied over the prepared surface, taking advantage of the good inter-coat adhesion characteristics of the Elgood system.

Colour scheme and line markings

  • The main floor was finished in Light Grey, giving a clean, neutral and bright working environment.

  • French Blue was used to define specific zones, improving visual organisation and supporting safe, efficient workflows.

  • Durable yellow epoxy resin line markings were added to highlight routes, bays and key demarcation lines, helping to manage traffic and reinforce safety practices on the shop floor.

Phasing and programme

  • To minimise disruption, the refurbishment was carried out in two phases over extended weekends.

  • This approach allowed production to resume quickly after each phase, while still delivering a thorough, high quality refurbishment across the whole 1,400 m² area.

All work was completed by Elgood’s own small, full time in-house installation team, ensuring consistent workmanship and a single point of responsibility for both materials and installation.

Outcome

The refreshed industrial floor at Leonhard Kurz UK Ltd in Watford demonstrates the long term value of a well designed epoxy flooring system and a considered refurbishment strategy:

  • A 1,400 m² industrial floor that builds on the strength of an original 20 year old Elgood coating rather than discarding it

  • A new Britdura 500 high-build solvent free epoxy finish providing renewed durability, chemical resistance and long term performance

  • A Light Grey and French Blue colour scheme with yellow epoxy line markings that enhances safety, layout clarity and overall presentation

  • A refurbishment delivered in two extended weekend phases, keeping downtime and disruption to a minimum

  • Continued confidence in a British manufactured and installed industrial floor system that has already proven its adhesion and service life in demanding engineering environments

By carefully preparing the existing surface and overlaying it with Britdura 500, Elgood Industrial Flooring has extended the working life of Leonhard Kurz’s industrial floor and delivered a smart, robust and clearly organised surface ready for many more years of production.
