Introduction
Lesjofors, a leading spring manufacturer, needed to refresh the industrial press shop floor at their Beckenham site in Kent. After ten years of heavy use, the existing Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy floor showed general wear and was marked with footprints following plant relocation. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to deliver a cost effective refurbishment of approximately 200 m² over an extended weekend, manufacturing and installing a new Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy coating to restore appearance, durability and cleanability.
Background
The press shop at Lesjofors’ Beckenham facility operates under demanding conditions, with heavy presses, plant movements and regular traffic across the floor. A decade earlier, Elgood Industrial Flooring had installed a Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy floor, which remained well adhered but showed understandable signs of wear after ten years of continuous service.
Following a relocation and replacement of plant, the exposed areas of floor were littered with footprints and localised marking. While the underlying system was still performing structurally, the client wanted to upgrade the surface to bring the area back up to presentation standard, improve day-to-day cleanability and extend the working life of the floor without a full-depth replacement.
The Challenge
The refurbishment needed to meet several practical and performance objectives:
• Provide a cost effective upgrade that made use of the existing sound epoxy floor as a substrate
• Remove surface contamination, wear and marking, including areas affected by plant relocation and foot traffic
• Install a robust industrial floor coating suitable for an active press shop environment
• Deliver a fine slip resistant finish compatible with scrubber dryer cleaning
• Complete the works over an extended weekend to minimise downtime and disruption to production
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring designed a refurbishment solution based on thorough mechanical preparation and a new Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy coating system.
Key elements of the solution included:
• Vacuum contained diamond grinding across the floor to thoroughly clean and key the existing epoxy surface, ensuring a strong bond for the new coating
• Handheld diamond grinding in areas inaccessible to the larger machine, such as around bases and tight corners, to maintain consistent preparation standards
• Degreasing of very restricted or localised areas where contamination required additional treatment
• Application of Britdura 750 Solvent Free Epoxy Coating at approximately 1 mm thickness in Slate Grey and Cherry Red, providing a fresh, clearly defined and visually attractive press shop floor
• Incorporation of a built-in fine slip resistant finish, ideal for use with scrubber dryer machines and suited to the operational demands of the press shop
All works were carried out entirely by Elgood Industrial Flooring’s own in-house team, from manufacture of the Britdura 750 system through to final installation, giving Lesjofors a single point of responsibility and consistent quality control.
Outcome
The refurbished industrial press shop floor at Lesjofors’ Beckenham site now delivers:
• A clean, smart and durable epoxy floor finish that rejuvenates the appearance of the press shop
• A cost effective upgrade that builds on the integrity of the original Britdura 2000 installation rather than replacing it entirely
• A fine slip resistant surface compatible with scrubber dryers, making routine cleaning straightforward and helping maintain a tidy working environment
• Clearly defined areas in Slate Grey and Cherry Red, supporting visual organisation and safety awareness within the press shop
• Peace of mind backed by a comprehensive 5 Year Workmanship and Materials Guarantee from a British manufacturer installer
By refurbishing the existing floor with Britdura 750, Elgood Industrial Flooring has extended the service life of Lesjofors’ press shop floor, improved day-to-day usability and delivered a high quality industrial flooring solution within a tightly controlled extended weekend programme.
