Introduction
Point CNC acquired a 500 m² facility in Kent to accommodate its growing number of CNC machines and needed the existing concrete floor upgraded before installation of new equipment. The surface was a mix of painted concrete and areas with adhesive residues from previous floor coverings, making it unsuitable for a modern precision engineering environment. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to prepare the slab and install a 2 mm solvent free epoxy floor coating in Sky Blue BS 20E51, delivering a hard wearing, slip resistant and easy-to-clean industrial floor in a single four-day phase.
Background
The new Point CNC facility was brought into service to support expansion in CNC machining capacity. However, the inherited floor showed clear signs of its past use: some areas were coated with ageing floor paint, while others still carried adhesive from removed coverings. There was also a junction where a wall had been taken down between two buildings, leaving a visible step and uneven transition.
To create a safe, professional and durable working environment for high value CNC machinery, the floor needed thorough mechanical preparation, localised repair and a high performance industrial coating. As British manufacturers and installers with over 125 years of experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring was chosen to supply a complete, in-house manufactured epoxy flooring solution.
The Challenge
The project objectives were clear:
-
Prepare a mixed-condition concrete floor across 500 m², removing paint and adhesive residues
-
Carry out minor repairs where a wall had been removed and ease the transition between two building slabs
-
Install a robust, solvent free epoxy floor coating suitable for CNC machining operations and daily industrial use
-
Provide a smooth, slip resistant finish that is straightforward to clean and maintain
-
Complete the full installation in a single four-day phase so that Point CNC could bring the facility into use without delay
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring designed and installed a complete industrial flooring system built around mechanical preparation and a 2 mm solvent free epoxy coating.
Key elements of the solution included:
-
Vacuum contained industrial shot-blasting
Shot-blasting was used to remove the existing floor paint, clean the concrete and provide a consistent mechanical key for the new coating, all with effective dust control. -
Diamond grinding to remove adhesive and ease uneven patches
Diamond grinding was employed to remove stubborn adhesive residues and to reduce localised uneven areas in the slab, helping to create a more uniform base. -
Minor repairs and transition easing
Where a wall had been removed between the two buildings, Elgood carried out minor repairs and eased the transition between the slabs, improving levels and movement across the joint. -
2 mm solvent free epoxy industrial flooring
Elgood installed a 2 mm solvent free epoxy flooring system in Sky Blue BS 20E51. The coating was applied by trowel to ensure an even distribution of resin across the floor and then finished by roller to achieve a consistent texture with fine slip resistance. -
Single-phase, four-day programme
The entire installation was completed in a single phase over four days, allowing Point CNC to progress quickly with machinery installation and commissioning. All work was carried out by Elgood’s own full-time, in-house installation team, ensuring consistent workmanship and a single point of responsibility.
Outcome
The completed industrial floor coating has provided Point CNC with a bright, durable and practical surface for its expanded CNC machining facility in Kent:
-
A 500 m² solvent free epoxy industrial floor in Sky Blue BS 20E51, offering a clean, professional appearance
-
A smooth, slip resistant finish that supports safe movement of people, trolleys and machinery around the workshop
-
A well-prepared, repaired and levelled concrete substrate, helping to protect the long-term performance of the coating
-
An easy-to-clean surface that supports day-to-day housekeeping in a precision engineering environment
-
A fast, four-day installation delivered by a British manufacturer-installer with full in-house control over materials and workmanship
With the new industrial floor in place, Point CNC has a robust, high quality flooring system that supports both operational performance and presentation in its Kent facility.
