2 mm Industrial Flooring for European Springs – Epoxy Floor Case Study, Beckenham, Kent

Introduction

European Springs & Pressings Ltd extended their manufacturing facility in Beckenham, Kent, and required a hard wearing industrial floor for the new 280 m² production area. Having previously installed gangways in the main factory and refurbished the Press Room floor in 2011, Elgood Industrial Flooring was invited to tender for the extension. Our Britdura 2000 2 mm solvent free epoxy flow coat was selected to provide a durable, easy-to-clean industrial floor in Slate Grey, installed in a single four-day phase.

Background

European Springs & Pressings is a long-established spring and pressings manufacturer with a busy production facility in Beckenham. More than 15 years ago, Elgood Industrial Flooring installed gangways in the main factory, followed by a Press Room refurbishment in 2011. Those solvent free epoxy industrial floors have continued to perform well and retain a good standard of appearance despite intensive use.

When the company added a 280 m² extension to the manufacturing area, they wanted the new floor to match the performance, look and ease of maintenance of the existing Britdura industrial flooring. The same proven specification, delivered again by a British manufacturer-installer with full in-house control, was the natural choice.

The Challenge

The new extension floor needed to:

  • Provide a hard wearing industrial floor finish capable of withstanding day-to-day manufacturing activity

  • Be easy to clean and maintain, supporting a tidy and efficient production environment

  • Offer fine slip resistance, giving sufficient purchase underfoot without trapping dirt or making cleaning difficult

  • Tie in visually and technically with the existing Elgood-installed floors elsewhere in the factory

  • Be installed quickly and efficiently to avoid extended disruption to operations

A thorough mechanical preparation of the new concrete slab was essential to ensure long-term adhesion and performance of the chosen epoxy industrial flooring system.

The Solution

Elgood Industrial Flooring designed and installed a complete industrial flooring system based on our Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy flow coat.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • Vacuum contained shot-blasting
The concrete slab in the new extension was prepared using vacuum contained shot-blasting. This process cleaned the surface, removed laitance and created a strong physical key without uncontrolled dust, providing an ideal substrate for the epoxy flow coat.

  • Britdura 2000 solvent free Epoxy Flow Coat (2 mm)
Our Britdura 2000 solvent free Epoxy Flow Coat was applied at approximately 2 mm thickness in Slate Grey. The resin was laid by trowel to achieve an even distribution of material and then finished by roller to create a consistent, fine slip resistant texture.

  • Fine slip resistant finish
The built-in fine texture provides enough grip for safe movement around the production area while remaining smooth enough for scrubber/drier cleaning and day-to-day maintenance.

  • Single-phase, four-day installation
The industrial floor installation was completed in a single phase over four days, minimising disruption and enabling European Springs & Pressings to bring the new extension into use quickly.

As British manufacturers with over 125 years of experience in industrial flooring, Elgood controlled the entire process from manufacture of the Britdura 2000 system through to on-site installation by our own small, full-time in-house team.

Outcome

The new 2 mm Britdura 2000 industrial floor has provided European Springs & Pressings’ Beckenham extension with a robust, long-term flooring solution:

  • A hard wearing, solvent free epoxy industrial floor that matches the performance and appearance of existing Elgood installations on site

  • A Slate Grey, fine slip resistant finish that is easy to clean and maintain using scrubber/drier machines

  • A seamless surface that supports efficient manufacturing operations and presents a professional image to staff and visitors

  • A fast, four-day single-phase programme delivered by a trusted British manufacturer-installer with a long-standing relationship with the client

With the extension now tied into the existing factory via a consistent Britdura 2000 specification, European Springs & Pressings benefit from a coherent, durable industrial flooring system across their Beckenham manufacturing facility.
