Industrial Floor Resurfacing, Hull: Factory Production Area Case Study

Introduction

A busy manufacturing facility in Hull needed to replace a worn and uneven production area floor at the heart of its operations. Having previously refurbished an adjacent production cell in 2017, Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to resurface a further 460 m², matching the proven industrial flooring specification and achieving the work with minimal disruption. The project involved removing the failing floor, installing a rapid drying industrial resurfacing screed and finishing with a Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy industrial floor coating.

Background

In 2017 Elgood Industrial Flooring had refurbished a neighbouring production cell at the same Hull factory. The performance of that industrial floor gave the client confidence to repeat the specification for this new phase.

The latest area was centrally located in the factory, surrounded by ongoing operations. The existing floor was uneven and breaking away in places, creating operational issues and making cleaning more difficult. The client wanted a robust, long-lasting industrial floor that would tie in with the 2017 installation and allow production to continue with as little disruption as possible.

The Challenge

The project requirements included:

  • Removing an uneven and locally failing floor in the middle of a live factory

  • Resurfacing 460 m² to provide a level, durable and hard-wearing industrial floor

  • Forming a 2 m wide ramp, tapering from 100 mm down to 10 mm, over an 18 m run to tie in with surrounding areas

  • Managing dust, noise and disruption in an operational environment by tenting the work area

  • Using rapid drying products and efficient installation methods to keep the programme tight and downtime to a minimum

The new floor needed to deliver both structural performance and a high quality, slip resistant finish suited to an engineering production environment.

The Solution

Drawing on 125 years of industrial flooring experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring designed and installed a complete resurfacing solution.

  • Mechanical planing and preparation
The floor was first planed using a road planing machine to remove the old surface and key the concrete beneath. This process also helped to reduce undulations in the slab. Following planing, vacuum-contained shot blasting was used to clean and further key the concrete, providing an ideal mechanical profile for the new industrial screed and coatings. Both operations were carried out over a weekend to limit disruption.

  • Rapid drying industrial resurfacing screed
An industrial strength rapid drying resurfacing screed was laid with an average thickness of 8 mm. This restored levels, provided a strong, stable base and allowed follow-on work to proceed quickly.

  • Ramp formation
A 2 m wide ramp, tapering from 100 mm down to 10 mm over 18 m, was formed using a rapid drying pre-blended screed. Because the factory remained operational throughout, the pre-blended mix allowed Elgood to use a forced action mixer rather than a sand–cement screed pump, reducing site impact and improving control in the tented area.

  • Epoxy primer and industrial floor coating
Once the screed had cured, a low viscosity, moisture resistant solvent free epoxy primer was applied to seal the surface and promote adhesion. The floor was then finished with Britdura 750 Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating in Dusty Grey, incorporating a fine slip resistant texture. This high-build industrial floor coating provides excellent durability, chemical resistance and a clean, bright appearance.

All preparation, screeding and coating were carried out by Elgood’s small, full-time in-house installation team, ensuring consistent workmanship and single-source responsibility.

Programme

The preparation works were undertaken over a weekend within a tented environment to control dust and protect surrounding production. The full installation, including resurfacing, ramp formation and coating, was completed in a seven-day programme.

Outcome

The completed industrial floor resurfacing has transformed the central production area at the Hull factory. The client now benefits from:

  • A level, robust and long-lasting industrial floor that integrates seamlessly with the 2017 installation

  • A clearly defined ramped transition between areas, improving access for people, trolleys and equipment

  • A Dusty Grey Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy finish with fine slip resistance, supporting safety and ease of cleaning

  • A rapid drying screed and efficient programme that kept disruption and downtime to a minimum

  • Confidence in a British-manufactured industrial floor system installed by a trusted contractor with an in-house team

By resurfacing the floor with a proven specification, the factory now has a reliable, high-performance industrial floor that supports day-to-day production and long-term operational efficiency.
