Introduction
Kurz UK Ltd, a leading manufacturer of decorative and functional coatings, expanded their operations into an adjacent warehouse at their Watford site. The new unit required a full floor refurbishment before it could be brought into use. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to prepare the concrete slab and install a high-performance industrial floor coating across 1,350 m², delivering a hard-wearing, slip resistant and visually consistent surface within a six-day programme.
Background
The warehouse had previously been used for other purposes and the concrete floor was in a mixed condition. Different areas had been covered with vinyl tiles, carpet and quarry tiles, all of which left behind residues of adhesive, grout and latex once removed. Other parts of the floor had been painted and there were patches of localised contamination.
Elgood Industrial Flooring has a long relationship with Kurz UK, having first installed a solvent free epoxy industrial floor coating at the site over 20 years ago, with a refurbishment carried out in 2016. On the strength of that long-term performance and familiarity with the site, Kurz once again turned to Elgood to upgrade the floor in the newly acquired warehouse.
The Challenge
The project objectives were clear:
-
Remove all traces of previous floor coverings, including adhesive, grout and latex residues
-
Clean and key the concrete slab to provide a sound base for a new industrial floor coating
-
Specify a robust, solvent free epoxy floor system suitable for warehouse traffic and day-to-day operations
-
Provide a slip resistant, easy-to-clean finish in a light, neutral colour to brighten the space
-
Complete preparation, installation and floor markings within a six-day programme to keep the expansion on schedule
The solution needed to be delivered by an experienced industrial flooring contractor with full control over both products and installation.
The Solution
Drawing on over 125 years of industrial flooring experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring designed and installed a complete epoxy coating system tailored to the condition of the existing slab and the client’s operational needs.
-
Floor preparation
Shot blasting was used to clean and key the main concrete surface, removing contaminants and providing a mechanical profile for coating adhesion. Areas with heavier residues of adhesive and latex were treated using diamond grinding to ensure all soft materials were removed and a consistent, sound substrate was achieved across the 1,350 m² floor.
-
Primer
A low viscosity, moisture resistant, solvent free epoxy primer was applied to the prepared concrete. This helped to consolidate the surface, manage residual moisture and provide an excellent base for the high-build coating.
-
Industrial floor coating
Elgood then installed its Britdura 750 Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating in the colour Light Grey. This high-build, solvent free epoxy system provides a tough, durable and chemically resistant industrial floor with a fine slip resistant texture, making it well suited to busy warehouse and production environments.
-
Programme and installation
The full installation, including preparation and floor markings, was completed within a six-day programme. All work was carried out by Elgood’s own small, full-time in-house installation team, ensuring consistent workmanship, safe working practices and a single point of responsibility from start to finish.
