Introduction
Alfred Brown required a strong and reliable industrial floor for its facility in Leeds ahead of the arrival of new machinery. The existing 300 m² magnesite floor needed to be removed and the underlying concrete required remedial work and resurfacing to create a floor capable of withstanding the new machines and the vibration they would generate.
Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to project manage the full removal, preparation and installation process. The works included testing the magnesite for asbestos, milling out the old flooring, preparing the concrete, installing Ardex K80 High Strength Industrial Smoothing Screed and sealing the surface with Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating in Terracotta.
The complete industrial floor renovation was delivered in a single six-day phase, ready for the critical deadline of the new machinery arriving on site.
Background
Alfred Brown needed an industrial floor that could support the practical demands of new production machinery. Once the existing magnesite floor was removed, the old concrete substrate had to be strengthened, repaired and resurfaced to provide a suitable base for the new equipment.
Because magnesite flooring can sometimes contain asbestos, the floor was tested before removal began and was found to be asbestos free. This allowed the project to proceed with the planned mechanical preparation and renovation works.
As British manufacturers and installers with more than 125 years of experience in industrial flooring, Elgood Industrial Flooring was able to provide a complete in-house solution. The project was managed entirely by Elgood, giving Alfred Brown a single point of responsibility for preparation, resurfacing, coating and programme control.
The Challenge
The project needed to address several clear requirements:
Remove 300 m² of existing magnesite flooring
Test the magnesite floor for asbestos before removal
Carry out remedial work to the old concrete substrate
Resurface the floor to create a stronger industrial floor base
Provide a floor capable of withstanding new machinery and vibration
Install a durable industrial floor coating with a fine slip resistant texture
Complete the full project in one six-day phase
Meet the critical deadline for the arrival of new machinery
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete industrial floor renovation system for Alfred Brown in Leeds.
Key elements of the solution included:
Asbestos testing
Before removal works began, the magnesite flooring was tested for asbestos. The floor was found to be asbestos free, allowing the renovation works to continue safely using the agreed preparation methods.
Magnesite floor removal
The existing magnesite floor was removed using milling equipment, with breakers used to attend to the floor edges. This allowed the old floor finish to be taken out so the underlying concrete could be inspected, prepared and resurfaced.
Vacuum contained shotblasting and diamond grinding
The exposed concrete was prepared using vacuum contained shotblasting and diamond grinding. These methods helped clean and profile the substrate, creating the correct base for the smoothing screed and final industrial floor coating.
Ardex K80 High Strength Industrial Smoothing Screed
Elgood installed Ardex K80 High Strength Industrial Smoothing Screed to approximately 13 mm. This resurfaced the old concrete and helped provide the strength and smoothness needed for the new machinery.
The completed floor build-up achieved a total thickness of approximately 14 mm, giving Alfred Brown a stronger and more practical industrial floor finish.
Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating
The smoothing screed was sealed with Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating in Terracotta. This created a durable, sealed and hard-wearing surface suitable for industrial use.
The system was selected to provide a practical floor finish that could support the demands of the new machinery while improving the appearance and cleanability of the working area.
Very fine slip resistant finish
The floor was finished with a very fine “orange peel” slip resistant texture. This provided improved grip underfoot while remaining suitable for cleaning with scrubber dryer machines.
Single-phase installation programme
The full removal, preparation and installation programme was delivered in one six-day phase. Elgood managed the project from start to finish to make sure the critical deadline for the arrival of the new machinery was met.
Outcome
The completed industrial floor renovation provided Alfred Brown with a stronger, more durable and better prepared floor for its Leeds facility:
A 300 m² industrial floor renovation
Removal of the existing magnesite flooring
Asbestos testing completed before removal works began
Remedial work and resurfacing to the old concrete substrate
Ardex K80 High Strength Industrial Smoothing Screed installed to approximately 13 mm
Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Coating in Terracotta
A total floor thickness of approximately 14 mm
A very fine slip resistant texture suitable for scrubber dryer cleaning
A single six-day phase completed ahead of the arrival of new machinery
By combining magnesite removal, vacuum contained shotblasting, diamond grinding, industrial smoothing screed and Britdura 750 epoxy floor coating, Elgood Industrial Flooring delivered a robust industrial floor renovation for Alfred Brown in Leeds. The finished floor provided the strength, durability and surface finish required for the client’s new machinery and ongoing industrial operations.
